This year for the Twisted Dreams Film Festival we would like to do a panel called “Why So Critical? A Discussion on Film Criticism and the Horror Genre”. The panel will be led by Michael Viers, a local filmmaker & podcaster, who has spent years of his life championing not only local film but the horror genre. This panel came to be from an idea that Michael had as he had noticed that the art of film criticism is often misunderstood especially within the horror genre. Many horror fans believe that critics “hate horror”. While that may be the case with some, we believe that if horror fans and festival goers had a better understanding of how a critic goes about evaluating a film they might have a better understanding. Michael has found himself growing increasingly more interested in the art of film criticism because of his podcast, the Shame List Picture Show, where they set out to analyze the merits of a different film on each episode. Can you enjoy something but still be critical of it? Are you critical because you hope for more from the genre? Let’s unpack these feelings and set the record straight. ![]() 12:00 pm - The Nursery - Check out the first film by The Three Tortured Minds, this year's of Wisconsin Horror award. It's winter in Chicago and Billy Cochran (Dylan LaRay) can't stop alienating the people around him. His mother Gina (Lynn Lowry) is in and out of the hospital and her mind is breaking down, caught between her glory days as a Southern belle and her current state of decay. One night, Billy gets an unexpected visitor: a rat that springs out of his bathroom and bites him. At first, everything seems okay. Billy comes home, drowsy from the tetanus shot, and bonds with Gina's lovely new caregiver Myra (Jess Paul). Then the rat fur appears. It grows out of Billy's skin, then goes away like it was never there. The more Billy looks in the mirror and scratches, the more he's forced to face the unthinkable: he might be turning into a rat. Billy is plunged into a waking nightmare where he slowly discovers the truth about himself as he unleashes the ferocious depths of the human and rodent soul. Dir.
